Our History

McGahey & O’Connor was founded in 1904 by Thomas D. O’Connor, an Irish immigrant who made his start as a stone mason building churches.
Over the next twenty years the company built several notable buildings in Boston and Cambridge and was incorporated as Thomas O’Connor & Company in 1928. With participation from his three sons Daniel, Austin and Thomas, the firm continued its success and soon was awarded significant projects in the construction and power industries including work with Boston Edison, the Archdiocese of Boston, Mass General Hospital, the Hatch Memorial Shell and higher education.
In 1948, Thomas O’Connor & Company formed Beacon Piping Company to provide quality mechanical piping installations. They quickly establish high profile industrial clients, like Gillette and Harvard University.
In the early 60’s Thomas O’Connor & Company led the way in enforcing industrial and construction safety protocol and was one of the first construction companies to employ a dedicated safety department to establish procedures, monitor daily activities and enforce mandatory policies. This vital attention to safety continued and later the safety department was incorporated as O’Connor Safety Corporation.
The third generation of family, Thomas H. O’Connor Jr. began as a project manager running work for Boston Edison, Raytheon, MIT, Boston University and MASSPORT and became President of the firm in 1988. During the 80’s and 90’s Thomas O’Connor and Company completed several multi-million dollar projects including MASSPORT’s Terminal C, The Senator Edward Brooke Courthouse, The Reebok World Headquarters and The Brighton Landing Office Complex.
In 1998, Thomas O’Connor & Company was renamed O’Connor Constructors. Further diversification came in 2002 when the Power/Industrial Division was officially recognized as O’Connor Corporation Inc.
Today the O’Connor Group of Companies is thriving with Thomas H. O’Connor III, the fourth generation of the O’Connor family as CEO/President. O’Connor Constructors performs as construction manager for higher education, public and private clients and has completed the first LEED Platinum certified building owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. O’Connor Corporation can boast some of the largest central heating and cooling power plant projects in New England. Beacon Piping is consistently ranked in the top 10 mechanical contractors in the Boston area and O’Connor Safety Corporation continues to provide professional safety services to owners and contractors. For over 110 years, the O’Connor family has built relationships based on providing quality construction services and exceeding the expectations of their clients.
