Kendall Repowering Project

Kendall Repowering Project
Cambridge, Massachusetts

Atlanta-based Mirant Corporation wanted to increase capacity at its Kendall Plant in Cambridge, MA. The surrounding neighborhood had become a progressive center of technology, increasing the need for more efficient power generation. The plans had to show a strategy for reducing emissions as well as increasing the output. O'Connor Corporation was selected as the major mechanical subcontractor.

Construction began in May 2001, with the Foster Wheeler heat recovery system generator (HRSG). Modules were brought to the site by 18-wheeler trucks and placed onto platforms. Each module weighed roughly 185 tons and was hoisted above the HRSG unit, carefully lowered and aligned into position. The assembly and completion of the generator in only seven months was a testament to O¹Connor¹s expertise strong relationship with local building trades. Final alignment of the turbine-generator unit was completed in January 2002.
